As a visual artist, I am not limited by a single form of expression, but pastels speak to me in a way that no other material does; the pure pigment, the buttery texture and the tactile application is completely addictive.
My work explores depth of field within a short focus to closely examine layers of leaves and flowers. Pastels are often considered chunky and not suited to fine detail, but I find that using my hands with the rich chalk allows me a freedom of expression I have not had with other mediums.
I painted these Proteas from a majestic shrub on my friend’s property in Cowaramup, and they work as a diptych (to represent the scale of the bush) or stand-alone pieces.
Working on a relatively large scale for pastels, the effect of realism at a distance is balanced by the painterly application on closer inspection. The glowing reds in the flowers are brought to life with the vibrant pastels and reflect the play of light as it dapples through the greenery.
While we work closely with our printers to develop the most true to colour print, due to different computer screen resolutions and print colours there may be slight variances in the printed colour.
